1. Xenical (orlistat) *
A drug that promotes loss of weight by preventing the digestion and absorption of fat in food. In the intestines, an enzyme called lipase (produced primarily by the pancreas) breaks apart fat in food so that it can be absorbed into the body. Xenical blocks the action of lipase and thereby prevents the breakup and absorption of about 30% of the fat in a meal. The unabsorbed fat is excreted in the stool. Xenical was approved by the FDA in 1999 as a prescription only weight loss/maintenance and reduced risk of weight regain in obese patients.
Common Side Effects of Xenical:The most common side effects of Xenical are oily spotting on underwear, flatulence, urgent bowel movements, fatty or oily stools, increased number of bowel movements, abdominal pain or discomfort, and inability to control stool (incontinence). To reduce the occurrence of these side effects, meals should contain no more than 30% fat because it is the unabsorbed fat that causes most of the symptoms.
2. Panbesy (phentermine) *
An anorexic agent/appetite suppressant for treatment of condition associated with excessive food intake, and as an adjuvant to dietary restriction. Generally, it is recommended by the FDA that phentermine should be used short-term (usually interpreted as 'up to 12 weeks'), while following non-pharmacological approaches to weight loss such as healthy dieting and exercise.
Common Side Effects of Panbesy:Dry mouth, restlessness, insomnia, headache, tremor, irritability, dizziness, and increase in blood pressure.
Non-Prescription
1. Nopal (Opuntia sp.)
Also known as prickly pear cactus, grows in North and South America. Nopal has been widely consumed in Mexico since the ancient Maya and Aztec civilization. Down through the generations Nopal has remained a popular fibre supplement to the Mexican diet. Due to high fibre content, Nopal gives a sense of fullness for a longer period of time, thus reduces the need for too many snacks. Nopal may be taken as part of a nutritionally balanced weight lost program.
