Medical Prescription:

1. ReductilReductil (sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate) is an oral prescription medicine used for the medical management of obesity, including weight loss and the maintenance of weight loss. Reductil was approved by the FDA in 1997 as a prescription only weight loss medicine.

Reductil achieves a reduction in food intake by enhancing satiety rather than suppressing appetite (desire to start eating). So patients on Reductil continue to enjoy their meals since the quality of their appetite and their meal patterns are not affected. With Reductil you will develop a sustainable eating habit with smaller food portion.

Along with decreasing food intake, sibutramine has been found to:

  • Improve cardiovascular risk factors
  • Increase thermogenesis
  • Improve blood glucose in patients with co morbid diabetes
  • Improve central obesity (waist circumference)
  • Improve levels of insulin, uric acid and C-peptide
  • Improve lipid profile

How does Reductil work?Reductil has a dual action in weight loss and weight maintenance:

  • Feel fuller with less food. Reductil can help you eat on average 20% less food by enhancing satiety via effects on the satiety centre in the brain
  • Burn off calories. Reductil can help you maintain a healthy metabolic rate during weight loss by increasing your body’s energy expenditure.

Every person will respond differently to Reductil when used as part of a comprehensive weight management program. You may be able to lose 2 or more kilogram of body weight in the first month you take reductil. If you find that you do not lose at least 2 kilograms during the first month your doctor may wish to change your dose of Reductil. It is important that you go back and visit your doctor after one month of starting Reductil to evaluate your progress on Reductil.

Most people who lose weight on Reductil lose it in the first 6 months of treatment. Scientific studies that lasted for 1 year and 2 years have shown that many people who lost weight and remained on Reductil therapy maintained their weight loss.

Common Side Effects of Reductil:The side effects are generally not serous and go away after some times. The most common side effects are: dry mouth, constipation, insomnia. You can alleviate some of these side effects by drinking more water, increasing fibre intake, and taking Reductil early in the morning.

2. XenicalXenical (orlistat) is a drug that promotes loss of weight by preventing the digestion and absorption of fat in food. In the intestines, an enzyme called lipase (produced primarily by the pancreas) breaks apart fat in food so that it can be absorbed into the body. Xenical blocks the action of lipase and thereby prevents the breakup and absorption of about 30% of the fat in a meal. The unabsorbed fat is excreted in the stool. Xenical was approved by the FDA in 1999 as a prescription only weight loss/maintenance and reduced risk of weight regain in obese patients.

Common Side Effects of Xenical:The most common side effects of Xenical are oily spotting on underwear, flatulence, urgent bowel movements, fatty or oily stools, increased number of bowel movements, abdominal pain or discomfort, and inability to control stool (incontinence). To reduce the occurrence of these side effects, meals should contain no more than 30% fat because it is the unabsorbed fat that causes most of the symptoms.

3. PanbesyPanbesy (phentermine) is an anorexic agent/appetite suppressant for treatment of condition associated with excessive food intake, and as an adjuvant to dietary restriction. Generally, it is recommended by the FDA that phentermine should be used short-term (usually interpreted as 'up to 12 weeks'), while following non-pharmacological approaches to weight loss such as healthy dieting and exercise.

Common Side Effects of Panbesy:Dry mouth, restlessness, insomnia, headache, tremor, irritability, dizziness, and increase in blood pressure.

Non-prescription

1. NopalNopal (Opuntia sp.), also known as prickly pear cactus, grows in North and South America. Nopal has been widely consumed in Mexico since the ancient Maya and Aztec civilization. Down through the generations Nopal has remained a popular fibre supplement to the Mexican diet. Due to high fibre content, Nopal gives a sense of fullness for a longer period of time, thus reduces the need for too many snacks. Nopal may be taken as part of a nutritionally balanced weight lost program.
